Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a price?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal. For example, $100 at a 7.25% rate is $100 ร— 0.0725 = $7.25 tax, for a $107.25 total. Choose "Add Tax" mode and the calculator does this for you.

How do I work out the sales tax from a total that already includes it?

Use "Extract Tax" mode. It divides the total by (1 + rate) to recover the pre-tax subtotal, then shows the tax portion. For example, a $107.25 total at 7.25% is $100 subtotal + $7.25 tax.

Do the state rates include local (city and county) tax?

No. The built-in rates are 2025 statewide base rates only. Many cities and counties add local sales tax on top, so your actual combined rate is often higher. Use the "Custom Rate" option to enter your exact combined rate.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that some localities in Alaska still levy a local sales tax.

Is this accurate for official or business use?

This calculator is for estimation and reference only. Sales tax rules, rates, and taxable items vary by state and locality and change over time. Always verify with your state's Department of Revenue or a tax professional for official filings.
