How to Use

  1. 1 Enter the original value — Type the starting value or old value in the first field.
  2. 2 Enter the new value — Type the ending value or new value in the second field.
  3. 3 View the percentage change — See whether there was an increase (positive) or decrease (negative) and the exact percentage.
  4. 4 Check the absolute change — See the actual difference between the two values, not just the percentage.
  5. 5 Try reverse mode — Calculate the original value if you know the new value and percentage change.

💡 Pro Tip: Use the reverse mode to find the original price when you know the sale price and discount percentage!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate percentage change?

Percentage change is calculated as: ((New Value - Original Value) / Original Value) × 100. A positive result means an increase, negative means a decrease. For example, going from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase: ((75-50)/50) × 100 = 50%.

What's the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change measures change from a starting point (has a direction — increase or decrease). Percentage difference compares two values without considering which came first, typically using the average as the base. We calculate percentage change.

Can percentage change be more than 100%?

Yes! If a value more than doubles, the percentage increase is over 100%. For example, going from 10 to 30 is a 200% increase. Similarly, a value can only decrease by a maximum of 100% (to zero).

What if the original value is zero?

Percentage change is undefined when the original value is zero because you'd be dividing by zero. In this case, we display an appropriate message. If you need to compare changes from zero, consider using absolute change instead.
