Frequently Asked Questions

Which barcode type should I use?

For US/Canada retail products, use UPC-A (12 digits). For international products, use EAN-13 (13 digits). For shipping and logistics, Code 128 is most common. For general purposes or URLs, use QR codes.

What is a check digit?

A check digit is the last digit in UPC and EAN codes, calculated from the other digits to detect scanning errors. Our generator automatically calculates this for you.

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

The generated barcodes are free to use. However, for retail products, you'll need to register with GS1 to get official UPC/EAN numbers assigned to your company. The barcode itself is just the visual representation.

PNG vs SVG - which should I choose?

Use PNG for web, email, and standard printing. Use SVG for high-resolution printing, large format displays, or when you need to scale the barcode without losing quality.
